Dissappointing!!!
Sep 15 2009, 12:44 PM EDT
I work for Jefferson Parish Public School System and I teach teachers how to use technology with their students. I have trained hundreds of people on how to use wetpaint wikis, but now because we are no longer able to remove the ads we are going to switch to another provider. I am very sad about this because I love wetpaint, but we can not deal with the ads. :(

Agreed. I get the logistical problem but there has got to be a better way then just a blanket no. Which provider are others changing to?

I completely agree. I'm presenting a workshop tonight to all of the teachers at my school on using wikis in the classroom, and I am very disappointed that the ad-free option is no longer available to educators. I am suggesting to them wikispaces.com, which also had ads, but I find that they are a little more discreet. They also have a paid ad removal, and it is much cheaper.

I'm in the same boat as all of you. What other providers have you found??? I'm very disappointed in Wetpaint. I have sung their praised throughout our school to now not be able to use them.

I know, I have trained teachers at 87 schools on how to use Wetpaint, and now we are switching to Wikispaces. Wikispaces allows a free upgrade for k-12 teachers that removes the ads and I think it makes it private. Does any one have any other wikis that they are using?

Yes, same thing with us. After more than a year of loyally recommending the site to teachers as well as others you can't help but feel betrayed. Advertisements on school sites will just not work. Hope they can reverse this policy soon and find an appropriate way to monetize school sites while still keeping the needs of educators met.

I am also in the same boat. I'm not knocking WetPaint at all- they have been so generous over the past couple years to educators. I understand their "Freemium" model and the need to generate income. I, too, have trained thousands of educators in my own district as well as regional, state, and national conferences encouraging the use of WetPaint. $20/month is way too expensive in education. In my district alone, let's say 100 teachers wanted to use and set up a WetPaint wiki. That's $2,000/month = $48,000/yr. That's the equivalent of removing one teacher from the classroom. We will be searching for viable alternatives as well- though none seem to be as good and simple as WetPaint. But of course I was very disappointed with the decision Wetpaint made concerning ads. I did not see the same similarities in pb wiki. So in my school system we are switching to wikispaces. And wikispaces does have the add free opion for k-12 educators. Hope this helps some of you Do you find this valuable? |
