Could you not add a section that requires the parent to put in their e-mail address along with the child's? I plan to use my education based site for my students to keep up with projects (especailly my ELA students! Peer editing on-line!) Although all of my 8th graders will be 13 some of my 7th graders will not. I set my wiki to private and require the parent to return a form that explains the wiki AND askes for their e-mail to set up their students' account (since they have to be invited to join). Yet now I have to have ads?!?!? Cannot wait until my 7th graders study sexual reproduction - I'm sure I'll have to stop using a great education resource. :( 12  out of 13 found this valuable. We're looking in to this issue as I type. If all teachers were as forward thinking and as careful as you with parent permission, etc then we probably wouldn't have this problem.

Most other programs make it the teachers responsibility to make sure they are applying to COPPA regulations. If we did open it up to all ages and added an agreement terms to teachers that they agree to abide by COPPA would that work? Then it would be on the teacher's heads not Wetpaints.

Thoughts?

That would be great. Especially if you had some sort of form letter that we could use to send home to parents. There are just so many options to integrate technology into the curriculum (create pages, summarize the week for parents, discussion board for assessment) to engage the students but I would feel better about encourage students to use my site if I was able to say that there were no advertisements. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Thanks for the feedback. This is what I need so I can go to Wetpaint and start to create some documentation so we can make everyone happy. Keep the ideas coming! Do you find this valuable?

Yes, yes, yes! This tool is so powerful, and yet available to 10% of my students. I have the permission slips in hand, I am anxiously waiting for Wetpaint to open up to all users supported by a teacher.

Absolutely! I'm really eager to get this sorted and at the moment have been told to make a new site but make it read-only. I've got no idea how to sort this and it would be much easier if I could just invite them and then delete their e-mail addresses. It's such a great resource that it's a shame we can't use it!

Agree...and in the end it's the law not Wetpaint that is the challenge. The lawyers are looking into it. But Google is having the same issues I think. It's a pain.....like school only begins at age 13. :) 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Hi,

I believe that the solution to COPPA Compliance has already been solved as ePALS provides emails and other school blogs for elementary students. I know that they do provide a set of documents related to the agreements that the various stakeholders have to sign off on to make it all legal. Wetpaint might be well-advised to check these documents with their legal department to see if they can be modified for your use.

Having said that, a far easier way to go, would be to forge some sort of corporate partnership with ePALS, which would greatly expand your market and provide ePALS with a much needed wiki tool.

I would love to have a one-stop shop for all my Web 2.0 classroom needs. My students and parents would only have to sign one consent letter and they would get access to moderated email, blogging, wetpaint and a global community of students and teachers. That would be a winning combination!

All the best,

Hi,
I am most anxiously awaiting the time when under 13 can use this site. As well as others, we have a small minority of students in our school (K-8) that can use this wonderful site. We currently use a wiki site to post student work, we don't use names, we have no pictures and the address of the wiki is sent home to parents, so we can have that parent-student-teacher connection. We ensure to the best of our ability to protect our students. We completely understand your waiting for the legalities, but we really hope it will be soon. When I went to the site, I was hoping to use it for our 1-8 students as we do with our wiki, as I liked the setup so much. Right now I have created the one Middle School page, but in reality it can only be used by 8th grade, so at the moment I have very little on the site. I keep checking back and when (I hope) it can be used by others I will be very happy to begin creating pages for all of our grade levels. Thank you for your continued effort to let other grades to use your site.
