Dear WetPaint,
I commend you on your age requirement. COPPA aside, research on brain development correlates "screen time" to health impairments. Balancing the influence of the digital age on the physical age is an appropriate question for innovators in the field to entertain.

I'm glad they do this, but I teach at a middle school and some of my students aren't 13 yet. I still want to use this in my classroom but how do I implement it without them being 13? Do you find this valuable?

Hello,

Michael here from Wetpaint. The truth is that due to COPPA, your students that are under 13 cannot register on your Wetpaint wiki. They can view it anonymously, but cannot share any personally identifiable information about themselves.

Dear Middle School Teacher

What key objectives do you have in mind when you think about implementing a wiki in your class? If you can characterize these, perhaps some alternatives can be recommended. 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

If the wiki is made private, available to only children within a particular class or school and the wiki is moderated by teachers, wouldn't that meet the requirements of COPPA 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I'm wondering the same thing. If all the children are known to the teacher and to each other, all have joined with parental permission and assistance, and the wiki is private, does that meet the requirements of COPPA?

Wetpaint's policy at the present time is that no users under the age of 13 can join Wetpaint, regardless of the privacy settings and permissions. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

I work at a middle school and we are using wikis on multiple levels in both 7th and 8th grade. We are currently using Wikispaces and I am sad to hear that we will not be able to migrate to Wet Paint...I love the look.
At Wikispaces, we send them a list of unique usernames and passwords for a group of students. No other information is given. Students are only identified by this unique name...no other information is shared, the Wikis are set to private, and moderated by teachers.

how do you send the kids names in? I would also like to use Wetpaint instead of wikispaces, but this restriction makes that impossble. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Would getting a parents to sign a waiver, and then setting things to private make any difference. I really think the concept of annymous posting is more dangerous than anything a private wiki and gaggle censored email. Do you find this valuable?

"Wetpaint's policy at the present time is that no users under the age of 13 can join Wetpaint, regardless of the privacy settings and permissions. "
So is "the present policy" likey to change in the near future. I teach in Quebec, Canada in a virtual school that is spread through out eight different sections of the province. Some areas are quite remote and some of the "home-bases" have as few as 8 secondary students. It looks like I will have about 80 students online next year, and my wiki is set up and ready to roll - but about 20 of those students will be aged 12. Is there even discusions taking place on changing the policy? If wikispaces can find ways to do it, surely Wetpaint can too.

We're looking into COPPA and trying to find a way to meet everyone's needs. Hopefully we'll find a solution soon for those teacher's and students who teach and learn under the age of 13. Do you find this valuable?

I hope you find a solution; meanwhile, I'll try to turn my new wetpaint wiki in something useful. I have a pbwiki and my students could go and subscribe freely. There were never any problems. Do you find this valuable?

So how soon is soon? I would like to know if we will have this up and running for under 13s by September, in case I have to go and recreate everything all over again on another site. It has taken me a long time to set up all my templates and I hope I can keep them.

From COPPA:
"Exceptions

The regulations include several exceptions that allow operators to collect a child's email address without getting the parent's consent in advance. These exceptions cover many popular online activities for kids, including contests , online newsletters , homework help and electronic postcards .

Prior parental consent is not required when:

an operator collects a child's or parent's email address to provide notice and seek consent;

an operator collects an email address to respond to a one-time request from a child and then deletes it;

an operator collects an email address to respond more than once to a specific request -- say, for a subscription to a newsletter. In this case, the operator must notify the parent that it is communicating regularly with the child and give the parent the opportunity to stop the communication before sending or delivering a second communication to a child;

an operator collects a child's name or online contact information to protect the safety of a child who is participating on the site. In this case, the operator must notify the parent and give him or her the opportunity to prevent further use of the information;

an operator collects a child's name or online contact information to protect the security or liability of the site or to respond to law enforcement, if necessary, and does not use it for any other purpose"

My educational Wiki will be used for homework help! All you have to do is require a parent's e-mail for the student to register and jet the parent an e-mail as the student posts. PLEASE!!!!

Great post cknight! Hopefully commonsense will prevail and a change of approach will still see our educational wikis COPPA compliant.
I am a teacher in Australia who has been using wikis throughout the year. The filters of a number our ISP's block Wetpaint wikis because of the ads. I have been forced to use Wikispaces which allows you to create ad free educational wikis as part of the setting up process (wouldn't that be nice????) I and my students much prefer the enhanced functionality and look of Wetpaint. I hope this can all be sorted out soon!
