Disadvantages of Content Analysis
Content analysis suffers from several disadvantages, both theoretical and procedural. In particular, content analysis:

can be extremely time consuming
is subject to increased error, particularly when relational analysis is used to attain a higher level of interpretation
is often devoid of theoretical base, or attempts too liberally to draw meaningful inferences about the relationships and impacts implied in a study
is inherently reductive, particularly when dealing with complex texts
tends too often to simply consist of word counts
often disregards the context that produced the text, as well as the state of things after the text is produced
can be difficult to automate or computerize

Advantages of Content Analysis
Content analysis offers several advantages to researchers who consider using it. In particular, content analysis:

looks directly at communication via texts or transcripts, and hence gets at the central aspect of social interaction
can allow for both quantitative and qualitative operations
can provides valuable historical/cultural insights over time through analysis of texts
allows a closeness to text which can alternate between specific categories and relationships and also statistically analyzes the coded form of the text
can be used to interpret texts for purposes such as the development of expert systems (since knowledge and rules can both be coded in terms of explicit statements about the relationships among concepts)
is an unobtrusive means of analyzing interactions
provides insight into complex models of human thought and language use

If you’re also doing audience research, the main reason for also doing content analysis is to be able to make links between causes (e.g. program content) and effect (e.g. audience size). If you do an audience survey, but you don’t systematically relate the survey findings to your program output, you won’t know why your audience might have increased or decreased. You might guess, when the survey results first appear, but a thorough content analysis is much better than a guess.
For a media organization, the main purpose of content analysis is to evaluate and improve its programming. All media organizations are trying to achieve some purpose. For commercial media, the purpose is simple: to make money, and survive. For public and community-owned media, there are usually several purposes, sometimes conflicting - but each individual program tends to have one main purpose.
As a simple commercial example, the purpose of an advertisement is to promote the use of the product it is advertising: first by increasing awareness, then by increasing sales. The purpose of a documentary on AIDS in southern Africa might be to increase awareness of ways of preventing AIDS, and in the end to reduce the level of AIDS. Often, as this example has shown, there is not a single purpose, but a chain of them, with each step leading to the next.

Content analysis is a research tool focused on the actual content and internal features of media. It is used to determine the presence of certain words, concepts, themes, phrases, characters, or sentences within texts or sets of texts and to quantify this presence in an objective manner. Texts can be defined broadly as books, book chapters, essays, interviews, discussions, newspaper headlines and articles, historical documents, speeches, conversations, advertising, theater, informal conversation, or really any occurrence of communicative language. To conduct a content analysis on a text, the text is coded, or broken down, into manageable categories on a variety of levels--word, word sense, phrase, sentence, or theme--and then examined using one of content analysis' basic methods: conceptual analysis or relational analysis. The results are then used to make make inferences about the messages within the text(s), the writer(s), the audience, and even the culture and time of which these are a part.

La Scienza Progressiva di Wavevolution e' la trasformazione da onde ad atomi e la sua correlazione a nuovi intendimenti fra Spazio e Tempo.

Wavevolution estende il concetto di evoluzione a tutte le forme di energia attraverso un processo di graduali cambiamenti che trasformano le onde in atomi.
Tutti gli elementi hanno una carica elettrica, una controparte ed una massa.
Il senza massa non esiste. La simmetria e' ovunque.
Gli elementi neutri sono composti da due cariche opposte e non sono particelle elementari.

Wavevolution e' la trasformazione opposta alla fissione nucleare.

Le ripercussioni da Wavevolution sono enormi e ribaltano molte credenze comunemente prese per scontate ma dovuto alle limitazioni dell'attuale tecnologia la scienza tradizionale non ha ancora potuto sperimentare la trasformazione da onde ad atomi e, per burocrazia di protocollo, essa non puo’ confermare alcun dato se non dopo averlo sperimentato anche se l'evidenza e’ proprio sotto i nostri occhi.

L’origine dell’Universo e’ rivelata anche dalla scintilla che appare con la frizione di due lame mentre queste vengono affilate. Prova a filmare la scintilla che appare da quelle due lame, poi riguarda il filmato mentre la pellicola si riavvolge (al contrario), al rallentatore. Vedrai la luce della scintilla che entra nelle lame e diviene parte di esse.
Infatti, i fotoni di luce rientrando nelle lame sono cio' che compone la massa dei metalli delle lame.
Questo semplice esempio dovrebbe essere anche un indicazione per spiegarci la Creazione di tutta la massa nell’Universo.
Sin dal Big Bang, le onde continuano a solidificarsi in atomi di idrogeno per trasformare la loro energia in diverse forme di massa.

In Wavevolution tutte le forme di energia si trasformano continuamente.

Lo stesso quantum di energia originalmente trasportato da una qualsiasi onda diventa gradualmente frammentato e disperso a causa delle interferenze incontrate.
Ad esempio, i quanta dei raggi gamma nel tempo diminueranno il loro potenziale di energia per diventare raggy X ed i raggi X gradualmente diverranno raggi ultravioletti diminuendo cosi' le loro originali frequenze.
Il quantum originale di energia e' trasformato in diverse forme di energia attraverso una rottura spontanea di simmetria. Una volta raggiunto un critico livello di energia (ben al di sotto delle onde radio) le onde collassano formando due particelle subatomiche con cariche elettriche opposte, come fossero le due punte spezzate di un capello.

Wavevolution mostra come il comportamento degli atomi sia identico a quello delle onde e come questo singolo movimento comune a tutta l'energia sia comparabile ad Una Volonta' Divina che crea l' intero Universo.
Questo costante movimento, la Meccanica quantistica, e' qui’ intesa come la naturale Legge di Attrazione fra due opposte e complementari cariche elettriche.

La scoperta dell'esistenza di Una Legge Universale che ebbe un inizio circa 14 miliardi di anni fa’ e che non fu causata dalla razza Umana conferma di conseguenza l'esistenza di Un Creatore.

Gli esseri viventi, costituiti da atomi, sono in ultima analisi il prodotto di un lento processo cominciato con la trasformazione delle onde.

Vecchia e nuova scienza:

Nonostante Einstein abbia portato alla luce l’equazione fra atomi ed energia e Planck abbia dimostrato la costante fra le frequenze d'onda e l'energia, la scienza tradizionale non ha mai chiuso il cerchio.
Ancora oggi la scienza non riconosce la trasformazione da onde ad atomi.
La burocrazia della scienza tradizionale impedisce il riconoscimento di un qualsiasi evento a meno che certi criteri siano stati prima stabiliti. Il motivo per cui la scienza non riesce a progredire e' seppellito profondo proprio nella compilazione di queste "leggi" o criteri introdotti da alcuni scienziati a nome di tutta la scienza e dal loro erroneo intendimento del rapporto fra Spazio e Tempo. Questo antiquato sistema di regole e' anche la causa di fuorvianti teorie.

Ad esempio, lo Spazio non e’ “curvo”.
Nel paradigma di Einstein, una pietra che cade in terra dal finestrino di un treno in corsa traccia anche una parabola nello Spazio. Sebbene, questa traiettoria e' solo apparente in quanto anche la Terra si muove ed il Tempo percorso dalla pietra per cadere in Terra ha spostato di un qualche grado quella immaginaria linea verticale. Al Tempo del Movimento iniziale quando la pietra cade dal finestrino la sua potenziale traiettoria e’ uno Spazio perpendicolare che non e’ piu’ lo stesso quando la pietra continua a muoversi fino a toccare il suolo. Se lo scienziato avesse saputo che le coordinate dello Spazio nel Tempo sono uniche ed irripetibili allora anche tutto il resto sarebbe andato "dritto". Quella perpendicolare e' dritta ma calcolata come fosse curva a causa dei limiti imposti alla scienza che e' cosi' incapace di riconoscere il concetto di simultaneita'. In referenza ad un qualsiasi corpo, in ogni istante di Tempo, esistono sempre soltanto due coordinate nello Spazio per una perpendicolare.
E con due coordinate non esiste la curva.
Una qualsiasi perpendicolare e’ irripetibile e mai piu’ la stessa in quanto mentre la misurazione di essa e’ ripetibile ed una qualsiasi misura potrebbe essere applicata a diversi segmenti invece una perpendicolare marcata nel Tempo non avra' mai piu' quello stesso orientamento spaziale.
La perpendicolare cambia nel Tempo ma Einstein credeva che il concetto di Spazio fosse indipendente da quello del Tempo.

Un altro esempio e' la speciale teoria della Relativita' che ripudia ogni assoluto e significato di verita'. Questo e' in riguardo all’esempio di Einstein di due raggi di luce che colpiscono uno stesso argine di binario su due Punti: il Punto A ed il Punto B. Fra i due esiste il punto medio, Punto M. Se un treno viaggiasse su quel binario allora avremmo anche un Punto A1 sul vagone del treno corrispondente al di sopra del Punto A ed un Punto B1 al di sopra del Punto B. Avremo inoltre sul treno il Punto M1 al di sopra del Punto M. La teoria di Einstein e’ che per il Punto M (che non si muove perche' sul binario) questi due raggi sono simultanei ed equidistanti invece per il passeggero seduto al Punto M1 che si muove verso il Punto B1 (e anche verso il Punto B) i due raggi non sono simultanei perche’ il raggio nel Punto B1 e’ avvicinato dal treno in movimento, per cui piu’ vicino al Punto M1. In questo esempio, mentre il concetto di Tempo per Einstein e’ rigidamente mantenuto immutato a riguardo del binario invece il concetto di Spazio e’ esteso anche al prossimo momento di Tempo per il viaggiatore che e' in Movimento anche se in quel preciso istante il viaggiatore non si e' ancora mosso. Poiche' il concetto di simultaneita' era stato abbandonato, Einstein credeva che il Tempo fosse lo stesso mentre lo Spazio invece era cambiato.

Inoltre, lo stesso scienziato erroneamente credeva anche che tutti i colori dello spettro di luce viaggiassero alla stessa velocita’.
Molta confusione proviene da queste approssimazioni.

Questo e' l'opposto di quello che abbiamo imparato piu’ di recente con lo spostamento verso il rosso della luce ed ossia che invece esiste un Universo in accelerazione ed in costante espansione.
Moderni scienziati hanno introdotto Standard Model e teoria delle Stringhe che pero' ancora oggi rimangono entrambi inconcludenti nel dimostrare come si creo’ l’Universo da quelle condizioni. Nelle loro teorie, questi scienziati provano a spiegare la Creazione con particelle atomiche gia' esistenti al tempo del Big Bang.
Le contraddizioni originano dalle fallaci conclusioni di Einstein e dalla reverenza mostrata da scienziati timorosi di intraprendere un nuovo percorso che non sia allineato. Einstein credeva che uno stesso numero di atomi sia sempre esistito e che questi non fossero originati dalle onde.

Le ipotesi di Einstein riportano che energia e materia siano analoghe e che l'energia sia trasferita attraverso due separati meccanismi: particelle ed onde. Questa erronea divisione mostra due forme di energia, particelle ed onde, come se queste non fossero intercambiabili.

Recentemente, il concetto di particella e' sotto un nuovo scrutinio in luce di esperimenti che hanno mostrato le piu' piccole particelle comportarsi proprio come le onde.
Infatti il Dualismo onda-particella si riferisce al concetto che materia ed energia esibiscono comportamenti affini ad entrambi. Uno degli effetti di questa teoria e' che il fotone puo' essere calcolato con una sua frequenza, lunghezza di onda ed altre proprieta' inerenti alla meccanica ondulatoria.

In questo contesto, Wavevolution si differenzia fondamentalmente dal Dualismo onda- particella nel senso che mentre questa ultima teoria considera il fotone come una particella che si comporta come un onda invece per Wavevolution le onde si trasformano in particelle.

Per Wavevolution, onde e particelle sono interscambiabili e tutta l'energia e' trasferita tramite un solo meccanismo, ossia, la Meccanica quantistica.

In un certo senso, il progresso della scienza arrivo’ ad un suo capolinea sin dal 1927 quando la credibilita’ della Meccanica quantistica e del conseguente concetto di causalita' furono entrambi messi in discussione.

In quell’anno a Copenhagen, lo scienziato Heisenberg introdusse il "principio dell'indeterminazione" secondo il quale è impossibile determinare esattamente nello stesso Tempo sia lo Spazio che il Movimento di una particella. Il problema e’ che per ottenere una determinazione esatta dello Spazio occupato, ad esempio, da un elettrone questa richiede l'uso di luce ad onde corte la quale trasferisce all'elettrone una grande quantità di energia che rende cosi’ l’elettrone imprevedibile ed incontrollabile. Invece per ottenere una precisa determinazione del Movimento dell’elettrone occorre una bassissima quantita’ di energia (quindi luce ad onde lunghe) il che pero’ comporta una definizione approssimata della posizione di quella particella nello Spazio. Quanto più esattamente si determina lo Spazio di una particella tanto piu’ difficile diventa conoscerne il suo Movimento e viceversa.
Heisenberg manifesto’ la sua frustrazione nell’incapacita’ di determinare la posizione di un elettrone ed a seguito del suo principio fu' deciso allora che quello che non puo' essere osservato con occhio umano non potra' fare parte della scienza.

Invece, il fatto che non siamo in grado di osservare con esattezza lo Spazio ed il Movimento di un elettrone non dovrebbe significare che l'elettrone non abbia una sua posizione nello Spazio. E’ evidente che la nostra conoscenza avviene attraverso la percezione sensoriale ma dovrebbe essere ugualmente evidente che il Mondo esiste indipendentemente dai nostri sensi.

La filosofia Soggettivistica di Bohr, Einstein ed Heisenberg crede che quando un elettrone o un fotone non viene osservato questo non abbia alcuna posizione ed una sua posizione si materializzi solo come conseguenza di un osservazione umana.
A nome di tutta la scienza, questa arrogante assunzione fu' sigillata da quei tre scienziati nel 1927 e trasformata in "legge".

Una nuova Scienza Progressiva dovra' assumere un ruolo piu' rilevante prima che l'Umanita' potra' scorgere i primi bagliori di una nuova aurora.

La Scienza Progressiva di Wavevolution e' la trasformazione da onde ad atomi e la sua correlazione a nuovi intendimenti fra Spazio e Tempo.

Wavevolution estende il concetto di evoluzione a tutte le forme di energia attraverso un processo di graduali cambiamenti che trasformano le onde in atomi.
Tutti gli elementi hanno una carica elettrica, una controparte ed una massa. Il senza massa non esiste. La simmetria e' ovunque.
Gli elementi neutri sono composti da due cariche opposte e non sono particelle elementari.

Wavevolution e' la trasformazione opposta alla Fissione nucleare.

Le ripercussioni da Wavevolution sono enormi e ribaltano molte credenze comunemente prese per scontate ma dovuto alle limitazioni dell'attuale tecnologia la scienza tradizionale non ha ancora potuto sperimentare la trasformazione da onde ad atomi e, per burocrazia di protocollo, essa non puo’ confermare alcun dato se non dopo averlo sperimentato anche se l'evidenza e’ proprio sotto i nostri occhi.

L’origine dell’Universo e’ rivelata anche dalla scintilla che appare con la frizione di due lame mentre queste vengono affilate. Prova a filmare la scintilla che appare da quelle due lame, poi riguarda il filmato mentre la pellicola si riavvolge (al contrario), al rallentatore. Vedrai la luce della scintilla che entra nelle lame e diviene parte di esse.
Infatti, i fotoni di luce rientrando nelle lame sono cio' che compone la massa dei metalli delle lame.
Questo semplice esempio dovrebbe essere anche un indicazione per spiegarci la Creazione di tutta la massa nell’Universo.
Sin dal Big Bang, le onde continuano a solidificarsi in atomi di idrogeno per trasformare la loro energia in diverse forme di massa.

In Wavevolution tutte le forme di energia si trasformano continuamente.

Lo stesso quantum di energia originalmente trasportato da una qualsiasi onda diventa gradualmente frammentato e disperso a causa delle interferenze incontrate.
Ad esempio, i quanta dei raggi gamma nel tempo diminueranno il loro potenziale di energia per diventare raggy X ed i raggi X gradualmente diverranno raggi ultravioletti diminuendo cosi' le loro originali frequenze.
Il quantum originale di energia e' trasformato in diverse forme di energia attraverso una rottura spontanea di simmetria. Una volta raggiunto un critico livello di energia (ben al di sotto delle onde radio) le onde collassano formando due particelle subatomiche con cariche elettriche opposte, come fossero le due punte spezzate di un capello.

Wavevolution mostra come il comportamento degli atomi sia identico a quello delle onde e come questo singolo movimento comune a tutta l'energia sia comparabile ad Una Volonta' Divina che crea l' intero Universo.
Questo costante movimento, la Meccanica quantistica, e' qui’ intesa come la naturale Legge di Attrazione fra due opposte e complementari cariche elettriche.

La scoperta dell'esistenza di Una Legge Universale che ebbe un inizio circa 14 miliardi di anni fa’ e che non fu causata dalla razza Umana conferma di conseguenza l'esistenza di Un Creatore.

Gli esseri viventi, costituiti da atomi, sono in ultima analisi il prodotto di un lento processo cominciato con la trasformazione delle onde.

Vecchia e nuova scienza:

Nonostante Einstein abbia portato alla luce l’equazione fra atomi ed energia e Planck abbia dimostrato la costante fra le frequenze d'onda e l'energia, la scienza tradizionale non ha ancora chiuso il cerchio.
Ancora oggi la scienza non riconosce la trasformazione da onde ad atomi.
La burocrazia della scienza tradizionale impedisce il riconoscimento di un qualsiasi evento a meno che certi criteri siano stati prima stabiliti. Il motivo per cui la scienza non riesce a progredire e' seppellito profondo proprio nella compilazione di queste "leggi" o criteri introdotti da alcuni scienziati a nome di tutta la scienza e dal loro erroneo intendimento del rapporto fra Spazio e Tempo. Questo antiquato sistema di regole e' anche la causa di fuorvianti teorie.

Ad esempio, lo Spazio non e’ “curvo”.
Nel paradigma di Einstein, una pietra che cade in terra dal finestrino di un treno in corsa traccia anche una parabola nello Spazio. Sebbene, questa traiettoria e' solo apparente in quanto anche la Terra si muove ed il Tempo percorso dalla pietra per cadere in Terra ha spostato di un qualche grado quella immaginaria linea verticale. Al Tempo del Movimento iniziale quando la pietra cade dal finestrino la sua potenziale traiettoria e’ uno Spazio perpendicolare che non e’ piu’ lo stesso quando la pietra continua a muoversi fino a toccare il suolo. Se lo scienziato avesse saputo che le coordinate dello Spazio nel Tempo sono uniche ed irripetibili allora anche tutto il resto sarebbe andato "dritto". Quella perpendicolare e' dritta ma calcolata come fosse curva a causa dei limiti imposti alla scienza che e' cosi' incapace di riconoscere il concetto di simultaneita'. In referenza ad un qualsiasi corpo, in ogni istante di Tempo, esistono sempre soltanto due coordinate nello Spazio per una perpendicolare.
E con due coordinate non esiste la curva.
Una qualsiasi perpendicolare e’ irripetibile e mai piu’ la stessa in quanto mentre la misurazione di essa e’ ripetibile ed una qualsiasi misura potrebbe essere applicata a diversi segmenti invece una perpendicolare marcata nel Tempo non avra' mai piu' quello stesso orientamento spaziale.
La perpendicolare cambia nel Tempo ma Einstein credeva che il concetto di Spazio fosse indipendente da quello del Tempo.

Un altro esempio e' la speciale teoria della Relativita' che ripudia ogni assoluto e significato di verita'. Questo e' in riguardo all’esempio di Einstein di due raggi di luce che colpiscono uno stesso argine di binario su due Punti: il Punto A ed il Punto B. Fra i due esiste il punto medio, Punto M. Se un treno viaggiasse su quel binario allora avremmo anche un Punto A1 sul vagone del treno corrispondente al di sopra del Punto A ed anche un Punto B1 al di sopra del Punto B. Avremo inoltre sul treno il Punto M1 al di sopra del Punto M. Motivating students to post

Have any suggestions for how to get students motivated to post?
I believe that the WIKI with the BLOG is good combination. The advantage of blog is that there brief commentaries are made. The advantage of the WIKI is that several students can make a document complete. However, wiki is more difficult to write up.

Ian's reply: I do not accept any work on paper. I get all of my students to just use wiki pages for everything. I used blog pages as well, but I find them to restrictive with chronological entries. If students can use Facebook or Myspace you can be sure they can use a wiki. Another great thing to do I find is to strip the best answers from an assignment or test and to pop them all together on a wiki page for student review. I make it anonymous (i.e. do not identify individual authors) but get a huge response and number of page views. Sharing student’s favourite photos is also a great trick. You can strip them off individual student pages, and paste them onto a class page. This is great as the actual photos remain hosted on the individual pages. Getting them to embed videos is also great.

One last thing. When teaching in China last year, I found that any wiki site that could have password entry (as opposed to password editing) was blocked so we had to use wikispaces instead of wetpaint or pbwiki etc. Once I figured that out, my Chinese students loved using a wiki, but you do need to council students to be more careful about what they say (particularly in China) that you would otherwise. I find University senior management tend to be a bit paranoid too, which is why they love boring proprietary products like Blackboard.

That is just really the ultimate question in education. One thing that has worked for me in the past is simply being enthusiastic about it. If I am really excited, and my students can see that, they are more likely to, at bare minimum, be a little interested in what I am talking about or doing. You can also have students post assignments to your class wiki. You can be a pioneer with a paperless classroom. “Don’t hand it in on paper, it must be posted.” I hope these couple of ideas have helped. Keep us posted on how it goes. Happy painting!

If I want significant contributions from students I have had to make it part of their grade. Otherwise, only a few students participate and we don't produce anything terribly useful. This term I am having students work in groups, and each student must also evaluate each others' work. Knowing that their peers will be looking at their work and evaluating it seems to be a good motivator for people to do good work. I have students do the evaluations privatelyby taking surveys I have set up at Survey Monkey (which you can use for free).

David's reply:
You have to give them a chance to get a hang of how it all works. Have an induction session in which they can all create accounts at computers in an IT Lab or MMLC and show them the ropes of adding pages, making edits and posting comments. A couple of barnstorming sessions in which they can post during lesson time with you on hand to help them with technical problems can help. After that you need a carrot and stick approach.

The carrot: tempt them to the site with good content - videos, quizzes, polls, study tips and so forth, and invite students to upload their best assignments as a reward. Use a sitemeter to find out who's been viewing the site - students may feel encouraged when they find out that their work is being read all around the world. Get the principal to post comments too if you can - a 'well done' message from the head can work wonders for students' confidence.

The stick: grade their contributions - use a rubric that includes how frequent their edits and comments are, how substantial and how constructive.

Like Ian, I love the non-linear, jump in where it's useful and appropriate (not at the bottom of the Blackboard thread) aspect of the wiki. Once students get the hang of it, they like that as well. Often they haven't had the Blackboard experience, so don't know how great this is, but sooner or later they learn.

Like David and Kevin, I made it part of their grade. They had to sign up by a certain date, they had to make a certain number of contributions by specific dates, and I showed them how I knew when they had done these things. I used wikispaces last year but am looking forward to the features that wetpaint has and using this venue this year.

David - are you willing to share your rubric? I used some guidelines, but it wasn't as specific as it needed to be.
