Community, Culture, and Language Learning

Our group for TSLE 7250 visited consulates located in Atlanta for Spain, Guatemala, Columbia, Israel, and Nigeria. This page will contain descriptions of our experiences visiting each consulate, and our thoughts on how visits by citizens of the mentioned countries to the consulates might differ from our own.
We plan to explore:
  • How local communities support the learning of a second language, and how they support the maintenance of a first language.
  • The reasons why culture is so important to teaching and learning.
  • What teachers can do to support he maintenance of home language and culture while pursuing the teaching of English as a second language in class.
