I have one student who is not able to accept the invite and I can't figure out why. I have tried to invite him now with three different emails, but to no avail. He gets the invitation, but when the wetpaint pop-up comes up, he gets the members only page. Has anybody else had this experience or know what to do?

The response above is completely unacceptable. The recent changes have caught out our school completely and the 140 or so sites we have created are now no longer suitable as ePortfolio sites.
Wikispacces appear to be able to serve both a commercial market and expand their support of educational users. Poor show wetpaint!

The authors did a good job proving their thesis. The examples in the piece were plentiful, which may have been a hindrance. There were pages that were made up of mostly examples of headlines and ways to change the headlines. While this is a useful technique, it tends to deter from the main point. The information is useful for anyone who reads newspapers or watches the news, and is accessible enough that it does not exclude anyone who is not a teacher or student of grammar. This piece is parallel to other material on this subject I have encountered because it states how to read the news critically. This is a to-do list of critical reading techniques, and is akin to what I have been taught to do my whole life when reading the news.

Abbott and Slattery provide in their article the thesis that it takes the proverbial “good ear” to really listen to what news writing is about. According to the authors, listening is all about balance. We, as consumers of the news must take into account not only the language, but also the concepts being presented to us in our daily intake of news media.
The authors used various headlines to illustrate their point throughout the piece. They take two different papers and pair them side by side:
“Those who kill someone while committing a drug-related felony could be executed under a House-approved amendment to a massive drug bill.” (USA TODAY)
“House-passed amendments to an anti-drug bill that would impose the death penalty in drug-related murders, deny government benefits to users, and allow use of illegally seized evidence may turn the war on drugs into an attack on the Constitution, some lawmakers say.” (Local paper).
“In the…spoken leads the grammatical subjects are much lighter in the two written leads.” (55)
Abbott and Slattery also talk about the rules found in modern news writing. They write about the breakdown in modern language, and the adaptability regarding language and environment. They stress the importance of developing a good ear when listening to news and reading news writing.
